There are many reasons to use the sauna, which we will return to time and again as I meet many people in the sauna and they share their stories.
Recently, a study from Luleå University, linked to the MONICA study conducted in 2022 in Norrbotten and Västerbotten, was published. The study shows that sauna bathers experienced higher levels of general and mental health, higher levels of energy and happiness, and reduced self-reported pain compared to non-sauna bathers.
In Sweden, we have an individualistic culture that makes many people in our society feel lonely. As we know, loneliness is harmful to health, and sauna bathing is often something we do together with others.
The sauna is a form of heat therapy where we sit calmly and quietly in the heat. This means that a sauna bather, compared to a non-sauna bather, rates their happiness higher, has less worry, a lower perceived level of pain, and better overall health status.
